The Age of AI has begun according to Bill Gates

AND Github Copilot X : The AI Powered Developer Experience

Welcome to The Alignment. Bill Gates claims the AI age has begun, do you agree with him ?

As always if you enjoy reading our posts be sure to spread the word !

Here’s what we have lined up for you today -

  1. The Age of AI has begun according to Bill Gates

  2. Github Copilot X : The AI Powered Developer Experience

  3. Tools that can put the boring parts of your life on autopilot

Bill Gates has penned his thoughts on AI and how he feels the recent developments are the start of a new computing age. That’s exactly how he begins his essay reminiscing about the first time he saw the demo for a Graphical User Interface in 1980 and comparing it to OpenAI demos that he saw in Mid 2022.

For Bill, AI will achieve outsized gains in improving human productivity. Advances in AI will enable the creation of “personal agents” that will augment all sorts of human tasks.

But beyond that he is most excited about the improvements that will come in global health and education. Two key areas of his philanthropic work.

In healthcare, AI will be augmented in numerous ways

  • Automating repetitive and confusing paperwork.

  • AI powered medical diagnostics that will let healthcare workers do critical diagnosis when a doctor is not present (especially in poorer countries).

  • AI to accelerate biology, to understand diseases, drug development with a focus on health problems in the poorest people etc (which are severely understudied).

  • AI to generate insights on crop yields, livestock management and more giving farmers a comprehensive understanding on how to maximise their farming.

In education, AI will touch both how we learn and teach

  • Context aware AI will know the individual interests and learning style of learners.

  • It will measure and track your understanding, strengths and weaknesses.

  • For educators, it will help teachers assess student performance , plan lessons, enrich examples and even provide career advice.

  • Teachers and students will continue to build relationships, AI will be there to make sure that relationship is put to effective use.

He goes a lot deeper in his conclusions about the need to develop AI that takes into account the biases of the world and understands concepts of inequity+inequality. He urges folks to not just allow market forces to determine what sort of AI gets developed and hopes more builders will think about the forgotten marginalised groups not well represented in training datasets.

A very thought provoking read which everyone should go through in its entirety !

Github’s copilot was one of the first breakout use cases of GPT technologies. Today Github announced Copilot X, the all in one AI powered developer experience.

In less than 2 years, the company claims that copilot is writing up to 46% of code and has helped developers code up to 55% faster. But code autocomplete was just the first step for Github, with Copilot X they are launching a whole range of capabilities to the developer experience.

Here’s what they are -

  1. Copilot Chat: Any piece of text database (including code bases) will be "chattable". Don't just read your code, talk to it.

  2. Copilot for Pull Request : Get AI generated descriptions of pull requests

  3. Copilot CLI: Bash can be unintuitive and awkward at times. No more bash, just plain English

  4. Copilot Docs: Longer GPT-4 context windows means that you don't have to memorise any doc, you can retrieve information by prompting the relevant doc.

Copilot X will not replace engineers, instead it will give rise to more 10x Engineers leveraging the tools to achieve massive productivity gains.

Around the industry -

  1. Google’s Bard lags behind GPT-4 and Claude in head-to-head comparison

  2. New AI tools in privacy first Opera Browser

  3. Ubisoft’s new AI tool automatically generates dialogue for non-playable game characters

  4. Mozilla launches a new startup focused on ‘trustworthy’ AI

  5. Lambda Raises $44M To Build The World’s Best Cloud For Training AI

Product Corner -
