Amazon joins the AI race

Plus GPT makes chemical drugs and Big Boys ramp up their pace

Happy Friday ! A number of AI announcements from big tech, looks like they have finally found their footing. Also, GPT-4 agents can create chemical drugs. Let's get straight to it !

2 months ago Amazon’s earnings report had zero mentions of the word AI. Today, they’ve launched Bedrock, their developer platform that helps developers build AI apps via pre-trained models from startups including AI21 Labs, Anthropic and Stability AI. 

Amazon has not included any of its own models yet and has mostly recruited 3rd parties to host their models. Amazon has also launched an AI focused venture accelerator which directly fits into the Amazon Bedrock pipeline. 

The platform has been built for large enterprise customers in mind. Apart from working with third party providers, as opposed to Microsoft exclusively working with OpenAI and Google focusing on its proprietary models, this offering is pretty much the same as what is already out there in the market. 

Everything will eventually come down to performance. 

For the longest time, researchers have claimed that GPT systems will not significantly improve when it comes to scientific reasoning. 

GPT based AI agents have been the rage for the past two weeks and so Carnegie Mellon scientists put GPT 4 to the test. Specifically, they trained an agent that was capable of planning and doing scientific research and demonstrated how it was able to make drugs. 

With access to the internet, specialised chemistry databases and a virtual lab the AI was able to correctly synthesise drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen. 

These results are extremely promising but have gotten the researchers worried. If off the shelf GPT-4 when exposed to the right data can carry out sufficiently complex scientific research it could very well be used to create highly dangerous compounds. 

"We strongly believe that guardrails must be put in place to prevent this type of potential dual-use of large language models. We call for the AI community to engage in prioritizing safety of these powerful models."

Host of AI Announcements from the Big Boys

From what was initially perceived as a slow start, the big boys of tech have been getting active with new and exciting announcements with their AI models. 

Google has released their best performing medical AI model MedPalm 2 to select healthcare customers. This is just a month after they first announced groundbreaking results from the model. 

Meta has open sourced “Animated Drawings” their AI project which brings sketches and drawings to life.

These folks might not have a legitimate ChatGPT competitor yet, but they sure do have and entire powerhouse of AI infrastructure that is primed for the Generative AI era. All they have to do is make bold decisions.
