ChatGPT’s latest release could render thousands of services useless.

Welcome to The Alignment. OpenAI has made another massive announcement. Honestly these folks are shipping absolute bangers one after another.

OpenAI has made an announcement that could essentially render thousands of services and products useless. Just hours ago the company announced ChatGPT plugins. Plugins are essentially tools that ChatGPT can latch onto for a variety of tasks, including accessing up to date information, running computations and third party services.

Here’s what you need to know about each of the plugins.

Browsing - The browsing plugin is an experimental model that knows when and how to browse the internet. This makes it possible to access up to date info and fixes knowledge cut off issue. To an extent it should also greatly reduce the hallucinations that the model makes.

Code interpreter - With this plug in, ChatGPT can natively run python, handle uploads and downloads. Essentially, you can now ask ChatGPT to run code for you (in addition to generating it).

Retrieval - You can now directly host your or business data and expose it to ChatGPT such that it can answer questions related to it.

Third party plugins - Link up applications to ChatGPT such that it can access specific information from them to perform tasks like ordering food, getting groceries, search and compare products etc.

Here’s an actual use case and another use case from today’s launch.

This launch is akin to the launch of the App Store. Many criticised ChatGPT for its simplicity and limitations when it came to functionality. With the ability to build custom plugins now an entire ecosystem of plugin based apps will be developed for ChatGPT.

Here is what Andrej Karpathy had to say about it

“GPT is a new kind of computer architecture that runs on text. Yes it can talk to us, but also to much of our existing software infrastructure. First via apps on top of APIs, now inside ChatGPT via plugins.

Competitors are rushing to bring AI into their products. Each week we see a group of companies operating in a similar market make announcements about products they are launching. Anthropic, GPT-4 and Google’s AI API were all launched merely hours from one another.

Earlier in the week we covered Adobe’s launch of Firefly (its image models). Just today, Canva (its biggest competitor) has announced a whole host of AI product updates for users. 

Here is what Canva’s users will be getting -

  1. Erase and easily replace items in images

  2. Type your thoughts and generate a presentation

  3. Image to design (Create entire design assets out of simple image inputs)

  4. AI text generation with support in 18 languages

  5. Improved models for text to image

Like it or not AI is coming to every product around you. We’re not even 3 months into 2023 and literally every major company has not only announced but also rolled out AI capabilities into their products. From Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Adobe, Canva, Slack, Discord, Notion to the many more companies that will creatively integrate AI in the coming weeks and months.
