Google's got News

Google I/O was indeed what everyone expected. A chance for Google to showcase all of their AI developments consolidated into a single event. Let’s take a look at the most exciting announcements they made.

As always if you enjoy reading our posts be sure to spread the word !

Here’s what we have lined up for you today -

  1. AI is coming to Google Workspace

  2. Bard is getting more interactive

  3. The Google Search makeover ?

  4. Project Tailwind looks super cool

  5. Google maps + Generative AI ?

  6. Anthropic’s massive context windows

AI is coming to all workplace apps with Duet AI. Duet AI is Google’s version of an AI copilot. By the end of this year users can expect to see Duet AI on all of Google’s productivity apps.

This is big, the Google Workspace app is used by billions of people. Yes, that's billions with a “B”. A scale far greater than the reach of ChatGPT or any other app for that matter.

Here is what Duet AI will be able to do :

  • Gmail : Email responses with auto drafts available

  • Meet : Meeting transcription, notes and customisable backgrounds

  • Sheets : Prompting to build sheet templates

  • Slides : AI generated slide templates and suggestions

  • Docs : All in one writing assistant

Duet AI will be made available through a sidebar on these productivity apps.

OpenAI is all in on plugins and now Google is bringing plug in like capabilities to Bard.

Bard will be able to draw in information from Drive, Gmail, Docs and more when users are having a conversation with it.

Third party apps like Kayak, Khan Academy, OpenTable and many more will also be integrated onto Bard.

Bard is also now :

  • Available to all users with no waitlist

  • Bard will soon support visual inputs and answers

  • Bard is now powered by PaLM 2 a more powerful LLM

The question is, is Google playing catchup to Bing and OpenAI or does that not matter (yet) given Google has the head start on scale and distribution. The tech wars are in full effect !

Google search is going to get a Generative AI makeover. What does this mean ?

  • AI powered summary of search queries

  • Context aware queries so that the search engine knows the intent behind each and every question you ask

  • Citations for search results

  • This is not a Bard integration, Search uses a combination of MUM and PaLM2 models

  • Advertisements aren’t going anywhere, there is plenty of room for with this new approach

This prototype project seems to be picking up steam, surprising that Google did not mention any specific plans of launching it anytime soon.

What is Tailwind ?

Google shared that Tailwind is essentially a notebook that lets users interact with any document they feed it with. The notebook then becomes context aware and users can ask and essentially build a line of inquiry regarding the document.

Google’s using computer vision and generative AI to create “Immersive View”. Custom built 3D routes that pull together street view, satellite images and live updates to get all of the information that drivers will need to plan their journeys.
