OpenAI wants to trademark GPT

Plus OpenSource is catching up and Spotify CEO thinks AI is cool and scary

Open source, trademarks and copyrights. This is where the conversation in AI policy seems to be heading. Let's dive deeper into whats happening in these circles.

As always if you enjoy reading our posts be sure to spread the word !

Here’s what we have lined up for you today -

  1. OpenAI wants to trademark “GPT”

  2. Open source is catching up

  3. Spotify CEO : AI is Cool and Scary

Since the launch of the “original” ChatGPT, thousands of GPT named applications have sprung up. Some subtly try to connect themselves to OpenAI while others are mistaken for tools that OpenAI is developing.

Naturally, OpenAI has tried to file for a trademark on the name “GPT” (short for Generative Pre-trained Transformer) in an expedited process citing myriad "infringements and counterfeit apps” popping up in the market.

The petition however was rejected on grounds that OpenAI neglected to provide complete evidence supporting their case to get their trademark request accepted. OpenAI will have to wait another 5-6 more months for a fresh decision outcome. Folks aware of the matter do believe that the trademark will most likely be granted to them eventually. And when this happens it likely won't be a good idea for folks to name their new products GPT anymore.

Open source is catching up

Hugging Face, the place to manage AI projects, has released its own take on ChatGPT called HuggingGPT . It does what ChatGPT does and is completely open sourced. Interestingly it was developed by the same German Nonprofit that built the original stable diffusion.

Replit also announced their fully open sourced LLM focused on code development. The model has been trained entirely on code and specifically on code written on Replit. The CEO of Replit, Amjad Masad also shared that the model outperforms Github Copilot's Codex model.

The entire AI team at Replit consists of two people (that’s right just 2) and the model will be available for commercial use. Replit also announced that they raised $97 million dollars at a $1.1 billion dollar valuation to continue to build AI first products.

The importance of open source is only going to increase, expect to see a lot more use case specific open source models from stealth teams !

Spotitfy’s AI DJ has been gaining steady traction. The company has always been at the bleeding edge of technology in media and now it faces a new set of challenges as AI generated content is making its way to the platform.

Universal Music Group was not pleased that music imitating Drake and The Weeknd made its way onto the platform raising the larger question of how the company would deal with music not actually produced by “artists”. Daniel Ek, CEO of Spotify acknowledged that his company does have a responsibility to protect the works and likeness of existing creators and artists while also being open to innovation in the creative industry.

He did admit -

“I think the whole industry is trying to figure that out and trying to figure out [AI] training…I would definitely put that on the risk account because there’s a lot of uncertainty, I think, for the entire ecosystem,”

He also said that AI will definitely help artists augment their music. Just like how mixing, editing and sound engineering does and that should not be confused with making fake tracks that pretend/ claim to be someone else.
