Roblox is diving into Generative AI

Roblox has now joined the group of multibillion dollar businesses that have announced their latest AI offerings. Roblox is in advanced stages of testing out its tool capable of creating items using code generated by AI.

The AI integration will work in two ways -

1. Using text prompts/natural language that can create 3D objects.

2. Having a github copilot styled experience that does auto code suggestion when developing roblox assets.

Given how active Roblox’s community of developers and designers are, these AI tools seem like a natural step to encourage developers to create more. It opens up a new dynamic in the creator led platform to make game design as easy as typing a message. Keep in mind that Roblox has over 60 million users !

A Wharton Prof suggests how we should be using AI in Education

Last week we covered Ethan Mollick’s adventures with Bing. This week Ethan shared results from his courses that require students to use AI to generate ideas, images or apps or write assignments.

He also standardised the AI policy across these classes.

The results that he got give us a glimpse of what is possible if these tools are integrated thoughtfully into education.

There were two major insights from his results -

1. Prompting is not easy. Writing a simple prompt, or copy pasting an existing task yields poor results and C- assignments at best. This leads academics to underestimate the ability of ChatGPT (and similar tools)

2. Best results are found when students become co-editors. Whereby assignments are generated and then edited using a series of conversational prompts between the AI and Students.

Like it or not, these tools are here to stay in education. What’s important is having the right pedagogical practices in place to familiarise students with how to use these tools before they are given free reign to use them.
