Romania appoints AI advisor "Ion"
And Youtube plans to build GenAI tools for creators
End of another busy week especially after OpenAI's API announcements which we covered in depth yesterday. It truly feels like another before and moment in productising generative models.
Here’s what we have lined up for you today -

Romania hires an AI advisor

Well this was not something that we had circled on our bingo cards but it definitely captures the zeitgeist. The Romanian Prime Minister has brought on an AI assistant that is tasked with advising the leader on the wishes of the Romanian people.
Named Ion this is what it had to say to the Prime Minister, “Hi, you gave me life and my role is now to represent you, like a mirror. What should I know about Romania?”. Ion exists in physical form as a mirror-like structure. The Prime Minister exclaimed the he has “the conviction that the use of AI should not be an option but an obligation to make better-informed decisions,”
I think we can expect more leaders in the near future to bring on AI Advisors of their own, the repercussions of which we will only find out in due time.
Youtube expresses initial plans of Generative AI tools for Creators
Neal Mohan, the executive replacing Susan Wojcicki after her historic run as Youtube CEO has hinted that Youtube will be providing generative AI tools for creators on its platform.
“Creators will be able to expand their storytelling and raise their production value, from virtually swapping outfits to creating a fantastical film setting through AI’s generative capabilities”
He also added that they are taking the time to put up guardrails to ensure that these tools do not infringe on safety and copyright guidelines. Youtube which has been a cash generating powerhouse for Alphabet reported an 8% drop in ad revenue is part of a fiercely competitive race with both Instagram and Tiktok both of which are doubling down on Generative AI technologies to maximise engagement on their platforms.
Hardware upstarts are also pouncing over Generative AI

Compute is king, and no other company has dominated the AI hardware compute market like Nvidia has with its GPUs. An under-discussed phenomena of Large Language Models becoming mainstream is how hardware will evolve to run these models. While most of the market value concentrates with Nvidia and to a smaller extent AMD, the current Generative AI boom provides a window of opportunity for hardware startups to make inroads to compete with the bigger players.
These startups, some which have cracked the billion dollar valuation compete on either chip efficiency or costs. But given Nvidia's market dominance, a competitor will truly emerge only when a new player introduces a step change for the entire industry. Some exciting startups to check out in this space include - Cerebras, Rain, Graphcore, Groq.
